Who needs McDonald's when you can make your very own VEGAN McMuffin? This is a cruelty-free version of a classic breakfast sandwich. I will say that the vegan bacon and cheese that you choose makes a difference. Here, I used the Lightlife Smart Bacon and Follow Your Heart American Cheese. It's also great with Beyond Meat Breakfast Sausage Patties if vegan bacon isn't your thing.

Try this easy vegan recipe next time you're getting a craving for a satisfying breakfast sandwich. It takes only 15 minutes to throw together!


  • 1 slice of firm tofu

  • 2 slices of vegan bacon

  • 1 slice of vegan American cheese

  • 1 English muffin (make sure it is dairy free)

  • 1 pinch of turmeric

  • 1 pinch of kala namak (aka: "black salt")

  • 1 tsp oil


  • Start by cooking the vegan meat as that will take the longest.

  • Add 1 tsp of oil into a frying pan, and heat the frying pan over low-medium heat.

  • Cook the bacon according to the directions on the package (usually pan-frying for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until crispy).

  • Remove the bacon from the pan, but do not wipe the pan clean.

  • Meanwhile, take your block of tofu (unpressed) and slice off a piece about 1 cm thick.

  • Place the tofu on a plate and sprinkle both sides with the turmeric and kala namak. Carefully rub the turmeric and salt into the tofu slice evenly.

  • Add the tofu slice to the same frying pan. If you have a good non-stick pan you shouldn't need more oil.

  • Heat the tofu patty on low-medium heat for about 2-3 minutes on both sides, or until it is warmed through.

  • Add the slice of cheese to the tofu patty while it's still in the pan and heat for another minute (you can cover the pan to help the cheese melt if needed).

  • While the tofu is cooking, toast your English muffin.

  • Assemble your sandwich with the tofu, melted cheese, and bacon slices.

  • Add some avocado or sriracha if you want to be fancy.


Tips and Tricks:

  • To make multiple sandwiches for a large group, try baking the tofu patties! Bake them on a slightly oiled pan at 350º F for about 5-10 minutes, or until warmed through. Add a slice of cheese to each patty about 2 minutes before they come out of the oven. While they bake, fry up the vegan bacon and toast the English muffins. Then, you can quickly assemble many sandwiches when the tofu comes out of the oven!
